Art Yowza Summer Camp: Cartooning Fun Day 1

In cartooning, character design interests me the most. When I work on my illustrations, I create unique characters first and then design the background, compositions, and other aspects of illustration. Today, I wanted to share the excitement of character design to the campers at Art Yowza!
I provided a paper with an adjective (jumpy, musical, adventurous, colorful etc.) to each camper. Then, instructed the children to create characters based on the assigned adjective. I was successful at choosing the words that were interesting to children, but I’ve learned the importance of giving specific instructions to provide more structure. Overall, the campers designed unique characters. To name a few, there were guinea pigs with super powers for word “smart” and a creature with four legs for word “jumpy”. Then I taught them to draw Art Yowza characters, “Rock and Roll Monster” and “Elastic Cat”. Both characters are creations of campers from previous weeks.
I loved Rebecca’s idea to use photo albums to create character books. Basically, the campers drew on the photograph sized paper and insert their works in the photo album pockets. After drawing Art Yowza characters, they designed more characters and added to the collections.
I definitely learned a lot today — it was my first day giving a lesson! Today was challenging, but exciting since I’m one big step closer to my goal of becoming an art teacher! In the first week, Rebecca advised me to find my teaching style, and I’ve been thinking about that lately. Clearly, I can’t be a teacher who crack jokes, make kids laugh and get their attention that way, but I am skilled at illustration and I can visually communicate with them. I can create more visual aides and provide demonstrations, and make my expectation clear by using my illustration skill! Let’s see how I do next time.
